Introduction to Norwegian Folk High School

Folk High Schools do not offer formal exams or diplomas. One year at a Folk High School does therefore not substitute a university diploma. When you graduate you will however receive a certificate, which states what you have learned.

Even though folk high schools receive financial support from the government, they do not belong to the national education system. International students who wish to continue their studies after graduating from a Folk High School will have to apply to universities just like other foreign students – one year at a folk high school will not earn you extra points if/when seeking admission to a university.

Teaching Language
All classes are taught in Norwegian. Many schools do however provide Norwegian language and culture courses for non-native students; these classes are usually taught in English.

You are required to have good English or Norwegian skills so you are able to communicate with the students and faculty. You are expected to reach a language level, which will enable you to communicate with Norwegian people after one year’s study.

Note that there are courses and practice courses during weekends also.

Tuition for one school year
You are required to pay tuition to attend a Folk High School. The tuition varies from school to school, ranging between NOK 44.000 and 84.000. Under all circumstances, Norwegian immigration authorities will require you to document that you have at your disposal
NOK 56 400 (including tuition).
The tuition will cover board (3 meals a day) and lodging (single or double room at your choice). All students live at campus.
