What kind of Residence Permit should I apply for?

Last updated: 30/11/2010 // The most common grounds for Residence Permits

The Embassy in Islamabad has experienced that most applicants for residence permits fall into one of the folowing four categories.

-Family
-Work
-Students
-Au-Pair

Family

If the purpose of your application is to move to Norway to live permanently with a close family member, you should apply for family reunification. Family members that are considered close are your Parents, children, spouses, fiancées and siblings.

Other requirements also apply, so even though you have close family in Norway this does not automatically mean that a residence permit will be granted.

Work

If you have got a long education or practice within a field where Norway needs additional work force you may apply for a work permit. Normally you will need to have a work offer from Norway that fills certain conditions before a permit will be given. In exceptional cases an applicant may be given a visa to go to Norway to look for work.

Students

If you plan to study in Norway you should apply for a residence permit for that purpose. Normally such a permit will only be given to persons who are already accepted into a University or University College.

Au-Pair

If you have been offered a contract to work in Norway as an Au-Pair you apply for a residence permit for this purpose. Normally a residence permit for this purpose will not be granted if one or both of the employers in Norway have the same citizenship as you. This is because the Au-Pair institute is meant to promote Norwegian culture and for you to promote your culture. If both are from the same country this benefit is less likely to appear.
