Norway established diplomatic relations with Pakistan when Pakistan gained its independence in 1947, and there’s been a Norwegian Embassy in Islamabad since the 1970s.
The relationship between our two countries are coloured by the immigration to Norway by many Pakistanis in the early 1970s. According to Statistics Norway, approximately 30 000 people of Pakistani origin currently reside in Norway. Most of them are Norwegian citizens, and some have become actively engaged in Norwegian politics. According to Pakistani statistics, about 9000 Norwegian citizens have Pakistan Origin Card, which gives them the right to own land and stay in the country. Today, most of the immigration to Norway from Pakistan happens because of family reunification.
