In 2000 the UN Member States agreed on eight Millennium Goals. In order to increase awareness about the Millennium Goals in Norway, the Norwegian Campaign is co-operating with the organisers of six events taking place this summer.
27/10/2005 :: At the Notodden Blues Festival, the public will have the opportunity to listen to the African blues band Tinariwen, which has been invited from Mali thanks to the co-operation with the Norwegian Millennium Campaign.
The Øya Festival in Oslo is focusing on Millennium goal number seven, which is a commitment to reduce by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water between 1990 and 2015.
At the Norwegian Band Federation’s 2005 Festival the participants will demonstrate their musical skills and in addition spend time learning about the Goals.
The Saint Olav Festival in Trondheim will include a concert with the jazz violinist Ola Kvernberg and the Gambian band The Ebou Secka and the Wollof Experience.
In addition to the 6000 registered participants in the National Shooting Competition at Lesja, the public will have the opportunity to take a shot at the goals themselves.
This year Norway Cup, one of the world’s largest football tournaments for children and young people, will focus on how sport can promote the Millennium Goals.
The Millennium Goals cover the themes of poverty, education, gender equality, child mortality, maternal health, HIV/AIDS, environmental sustainability and partnership for development. The Norwegian Millennium Campaign was launched in June 2004 on the initiative of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is led by four organisations: the UN Association of Norway, the Peace Corps, UNDP Nordic Office and UNICEF Norway.
